BRATTAHLID WOOL WORKSHOP

Brattahlid Wool Workshop is a new local farmer-owned creative and interactive space in Qassiarsuk in the heart of South Greenlandic farm country. Here, Ellen K. Frederiksen from Illunnguujuk Sheep Farm just 1 km from Qassiarsuk, brings local wool culture directly to curious and conscious minds through multi-day courses. She also tells stories and shares the values that are central to life as an inuk sheep farmer - which shine through when working with wool:
self-sufficiency, creativity and thoughtful resource management.
Ellen had dreamed of this wool workshop for years, and it finally became a reality with a grant from the Lindblad Artisan Fund. The name is an homage to its physical location at the spot where arctic agriculture all began in the 10th century, when Erik the Red established the first farm in Norse Greenland and called it Brattahlið.
Today, the ruins of Brattahlið and the entire sheep farming settlement and area of Qassiarsuk (est. 1924) are known as component area 1 within the bounds of KUJATAA, South Greenland's UNESCO World Heritage Site honoring arctic agriculture in both the Viking / Norse era and in the present day inuit era.
